- Festival of Ethnic Music and Land-Art
On July 6-8 the International Festival of ethnic music and land-art "Sheshory'2004" was hold in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine. This year it welcomed Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Poland and Russia. The Festival gathered more than two thousand guests from all regions of Ukraine and from other countries.
Festival consists on three components: the Music Festival itself, land-art and environmental component.
The Festival presented the music of different countries, styles and genres; true folklore and its various displays in the contemporary music culture. But all this music has one common feature – ethnic roots; it sprang up in the times when a man was directly connected to the environment and was aware of his place in it.
All three days (and three nights) of the Festival were full of events. The musical part consisted of the performances of 20 music bands. The first day was devoted to the authentic Ukrainian folklore. In next two days Ukraine was presented by the leading music bands playing world music. There was also a lot of room for joint performances.
More information on www.sheshory.org
The Festival demonstrated Land-art. The environment itself became the place and the method of realizing ideas of authors. The artists created "objects in the environment" relying on the existing lines, forms, textures and states (helpful tools - paints, cloths, wax, glass and so on). Some art objects united visual and sound elements (where the musicians joined the artists).
The efforts of artists turned Sheshory surroundings into a huge open-air art gallery. Among the participants were artists well known in Ukraine and abroad, who participated in land-art-symposiums in different countries of the world. Students of the National Academy of Visual Art and Architecture and Lviv Art Academy also took part in land-art events.
Every artist had his own goal and means, but all of them emphasized a person who does not exist on his own but in a shared environment.
Before the Festival the land-art gallery was created at its site. Land-art is rather popular in other countries of the world and just starts attracting fans, including artists, in Ukraine.
Master-classes and environmental activities formed a part of the Festival in all three days and attracted attention of many guests, especially master classes on local herbs, vytynanka, weaving, making Hutzul folklore music instruments. The class on making traditional Ukrainian doll - motanka - turned to be a nice surprise even for local dwellers. Environmental events became a unique element of the Festival: environmentalists from public organizations of Ukraine and members of Kosiv local community held several seminars, the international round table on the implementation of the Carpathian convention, cleaned Local River and waterfalls from garbage.
During the year the Festival "Sheshory'2004" werel presented a series of eco and art actions, including street theaters, concerts, cinema shows, photo galleries, land-art events and so on.
